Investments in India natural corollary of peace in region: Goyal

New Delhi, Feb 25 (IANS): Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday said that the road to becoming a $5 trillion economy will be getting investments in India and these will be a natural corollary of "peace in the region".

The minister's remark comes amid violence in Delhi over the CAA even as the country is hosting US President Donald Trump on his first state visit.

Goyal was speaking at the US India Forum here on India's ambition to drive out poverty and becoming a $5 trillion economy under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Although Union Home Minister Amit Shah met Delhi Lt Governor Anil Baijal and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to discuss steps to end violence in northeast Delhi, there were fresh reports coming of stone pelting from various areas there.

Reports of violence and arson continue to trickle in from the affected areas as hospital officials confirmed that nine people, including a police head constable, have died in the rioting that has continued sporadically across several localities since Saturday.

For security reasons, the Delhi Police has ordered metro stations in the violence-prone areas to be closed. The entrance and exit gates of Jaffarabad, Maujpur-Babarpur, Gokulpuri, Johri Enclave and Shiv Vihar metro stations have been closed.

These areas witnessed violence and arson on Monday and these metro stations have been closed so that the unruly elements from outside do not enter.
