Mangaluru, Mar 2: “I should be the prophet of life. It is my responsibility to protect and promote life,” said Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, bishop of Mangaluru diocese, inaugurating the suicide prevention day here at Rosario cathedral.

Bishop Saldanha further said, “In India, especially the younger generation is prone for the evil of suicide. This movement, which we are beginning today to prevent suicide and promote life must continue lifelong.”

Bishop Saldanha presided over the programme. Sr Evline Bennis,lLecturer Roshni Nilaya was the chief guest and spoke on the reasons, effects and the prevention of suicides.

Fr J B Crasta, rector of the cathedral, associate priests, parish vice president Elizabeth Roche, secretary Alwyn Tauro and the parishioners were present.

Lilly Cutinho compered the programme and Gilbert D’Silva, secretary of parish Family life commission rendered the vote of thanks.

“Human life is precious; we need to protect life and respect it’, on this motto, the diocese of Mangaluru has taken this year to be the ‘Year of Respect for Human Life’ and the Prevention of Suicide day was celebrated as one of its programmes on the first Sunday of March all over the diocese of Mangaluru.
