Udupi, Mar 5: In a college in the city, a student who had come to appear for the second PU final examination which went underway all over the state on Wednesday, March 4, was turned away by a lecturer for not wearing college uniform. The student, who became nervous at this observation, rushed home, wore her uniform, came back and appeared for the examination.

The student, upset at the observation made by a lady lecturer, went to her home in Mission Compound, about two and half kilometres away, it is said. She then came back in uniform, and appeared for the examination. The parents are unhappy at this development and criticized the college management for making such rules.

The girl had been dropped at the examination centre by her mother in a scooter. When the mother was returning home by scooter, she received a phone call from the college but she failed to notice the ring as she was riding the scooter. After she reached home, she called the college and was informed that her daughter was sent back for want of uniform.

The college management said that they had not made wearing of uniform mandatory for the students. They said most of the students wore uniform and expressed ignorance about any such thing enforced by lecturers of other colleges.

PU education department deputy director Bhagawant Kattimane, said that uniform is useful as a means of identity and wearing it is not compulsory. He has requested the concerned not to create problems for the students in such matters.
