Bengaluru, Apr 7: The state government was facing the need to adhere to certain high court orders during this month. Because of lockdown, it has got temporary reprieve from hard stand the high court is expected to take in at least a few serious cases.

In some of the cases which were listed for this period are clearing of unauthorized religious buildings all over the state, demolition of illegal constructions in the city, several public interest litigations filed by several advocates, organizations and others about solid waste disposal and other issues, a suo moto PIL registered by the high court itself, the government was to file compliance reports by March end or April first and second weeks. As the high court is not conducting business now, the government has escaped from punitive action.

The high court has already warned of taking action against guilty officials and department including contempt of court cases for not obeying court orders. In a number of cases, the government was in a legal bind.

Out of the above, demolition of unauthorized religious structures as per Supreme Court orders relating to which the high court has registered suo moto public interest litigation, and removal of illegal buildings within the city limits about which compliance reports are to be filed, happen to be the most tricky ones.
