Udupi, Apr 7: Sensing that Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts are facing a shortage of sanitisers, Udupi district unit of the excise department successfully produced sanitiser and supplied the same to the two districts.

On account of lockdown, liquor shops all over the district are closed. Therefore, alcohol-based sanitisers are being made in distilleries which generally is used to make liquor. With the permission of the department of drug control, sanitiser is being made in Sarvodaya distillery in Udupi district, said deputy commissioner of excise department Nagesh Kumar.

He said that coronavirus perishes only when sanitisers having more than 70 per cent alcohol content are used. "Therefore, our sanitiser has 80 per cent alcohol, 1.53 per cent glycerol, 0.125 per cent hydrogen peroxide and balance demineralized water," he explained. Kumar announced that in three phases, 1,350 litres of sanitiser was supplied to Udupi district and 1,800 litres to Dakshina Kannada. "There is a demand for more from Dakshina Kannada. The department is prepared to make more sanitisers if there is a need," Kumar added.
