Udupi, Apr 15: The Udupi district Mahila Congress has condemned the move where the doctors of Karkala taluk government hospital denied treatment to a pregnant woman.

The patient identified as Indira Shetty, who was pregnant and was brought to the taluk hospital was denied treatment by the doctors. They instead advised to get her shifted either to Udupi or Mangaluru hospital.

Indira's mother had brought her to the hospital in an ambulance as her husband was stuck in Mumbai due to the lockdown. When the matter was brought to the notice of the Karkala MLA Sunil Kumar, he had agreed to talk to the doctors. However, there was no response from Kumar thereafter.

Indira was then shifted to Koosamma Shambhu Shetty Memorial Haji Abdullah Mother and Child hospital in Udupi where she received the necessary treatment.

Speaking to Daijiworld, Udupi district health officer Dr Sudheer Chandra Sooda said, "The incident happened in Karkala taluk hospital. It has come to my notice. When the gynecologist treated the patient, initially they found out that cesarean treatment was further needed. But due to the shortage of anesthesia in the hospital she was referred to hospital in Udupi."

Udupi district Congress women's wing has condemned the incident and has requested the DHO to conduct a fair investigation in the matter.
