Mangaluru: Mayor Diwakar visits Thumbe dam, allays fear of water scarcity

Mangaluru, Apr 16: “There is sufficient quantity of water in Thumbe dam when compared to last year. The water can last was 50 days. Water was let out twice from Shambhoor MMR dam last year. It is released only once this year. The water level in the dam is 6 metres at present,” said mayor Diwakar Pandeshwar.

He was speaking to reporters on Thursday, April 16, after inspecting the collection of water in the company of officials. “Water rationing had begun at this time last year. All the people are at homes due to fear of Corona at present. Though the consumption of water is high, there was no need for rationing,” he said.

Corporation commissioner Ajith Kumar Hegde said that there is 16.60 meters water in Shambhoor dam. “As rain is expected when the water becomes less, there is no need for anxiety,” he said.

Assistant commissioner Dr Santhsoh, executive engineer Ravi Shanker, assistant executive engineer Naresh Shenoy, junior engineer Richard and others were present.

    Water scarcity fears have been around for the past 30 to 40 summers in Mangalore. This year the prediction is that the Monsoon will be normal. It will actually be in Excess. But that apart the Authorities should do the following on Top Priority :

    1. Encourage Rain Water Harvest .
    2. Revive all old Wells lying buried
    3. Encourage citizens /Depts to plant more trees
