Udupi, Apr 17: A meeting was chaired by the deputy commissioner at zilla panchayat’s Dr V S Acharya auditorium on Thursday to mobilize resources for shelter homes. Twelve such shelter homes were opened in the district for construction workers and migrant labourers. While the district administration needs to take initiative for the welfare of those in the shelter homes and the poor people in the district, 658 workers are provided food and accommodation in them considering that the lockdown in the country is extended till May 3.

Presidents and office bearers of local groups and associations present in the meeting said that they will join the district administration to provide necessary kits in kind for the poor and those who are in the shelter homes.

Zilla panchayat chief executive Preeti Geylot, additional deputy commissioner Sadashiva Prabhu, assistant commissioner Raju, district sand dealers, district crusher unit and stone quarries contractors, Udupi contractors association, Chamber of Commerce and Industries Association, wine merchants association, rice mill association, oil mill association, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi fishermen’s federation, poultry farmer’s association, flex printing association, South Kanara photographer’s association, small scale industries association, jeweller's association presidents and office bearers were present.

Another meeting was held subsequently for the purpose at the venue on the same date. All the tahsildars, temple heads that provide food for the needy, presidents and office bearers of local service groups provided suitable suggestions.

The deputy commissioner thanked those who are joining hands with the district administration during the current critical situation.
