Udupi: Migrant workers booked for violating lockdown norms

Udupi, Apr 20: The state government has enforced lockdown in order to regulate spread of pandemic coronavirus infection till May 3 this year. A group of migrant workers who defied the lockdown norms and tried to go back to their native places, were arrested at Shirur check post on the border of the district with Uttara Kannada on Sunday April 19.

The violators have been identified as Neelappa (37), Renuka (28), Yamanurappa (37), Durugesh (26), and Nagamma (22), all of whom work for KPTCL power plant and residing at Neerjeddu, Ganapathi Kodlu in Mandarthi, Heggunje village, and also Mallappa (40) and Huligeppa (40) who work as coolies at Manipal. All of them are native of Alakavatagi village, Lingasugur, Raichur district.

Without providing any information or obtaining permission from development officer of Heggune gram panchayat, local tahsildar or the deputy commissioner, in violation of the government order, these persons had recklessly decided to go back to their native place in spite of being aware about the dangers posed by such an act by way of spreading coronavirus infection. The police say that they were negligent in violating the rules and travelling together by a goods lorry bearing registration number KA 36 B 769 towards their hometown. They got caught at the check post at Shirur.

A case was registered under section 269 of Indian penal code against the violator in Brahmavar police station.
