Borrow gold from religious trusts for public benefit: Maha ex-CM

Mumbai, May 13 (IANS): In a potentially controversial statement, senior Congress leader and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Wednesday suggested that the government should utilise the huge quantities of gold lying with various religious trusts in the country to finance the rebuilding of the economy post-Covid-19 pandemic.

He urged that the gold should be deployed to tide over the current financial crisis that has gripped the country in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

"Government must immediately appropriate all the gold lying with all the religious trusts in the country, worth at least USD One Trillion, according to the World Gold Council. The gold can be borrowed through gold bonds at a low interest rate. This is an emergency," Chavan said in a tweet, where he tagged Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He made it clear that when he mentioned religious trusts, it was cutting across religions.

"As per the WGC, the gold is worth around Rs 75 lakh crore. When the country needs it, it must be used," said Chavan in his series of tweets.

It could be done through a gold bond scheme with a small interest paid on it, and since it (the gold in religious trusts) is the nation's property, there's no harm in using it for public benefit, he added.

"During wars that India has seen, people have come out and given their gold to the government. We can have a scheme and even give them (the religious trusts) a small interest on it," said Chavan.

The technocrat-turn-politician who is a former Union Minister pointed out that since the past nearly two months, he had been advocating a stimulus package of at least Rs 20 lakh crore and welcomed the PM's announcement of Tuesday evening.

Is the gold borrowed to be sold or used as collateral for loans for government to raise money. If it is sold, who will buy it? Banks, people, or politicians to convert their cash holdings. If borrowed, then the gold is to be returned in specie. After retiring bank loans the bank will then return the gold which can be returned to the lending temples, mosques, churches and other religious institutions who have loaned the treasures.

I am away from India & very old, Reading and watching hungry tired migrants walking miles together to reach home. The pictures/video/news published on media show very disturbing condition of fellow country man, women & children. If anyone believes in any religion or God for them this is the testing time to stop the migrants and provide shelter and food in homes, temples & places of worship. Government should forget about Corona virus and provide free Trains and Buses to people for one month to reach their destination. If not Corona will stay with us and send us early to hell and our religion & grate Indian culture will have no meaning. Lord Krishna & Lord Rama are watching our deeds and may be very angry about us.

Do a little bit of research on the subject and then decide whether the idea is good or bad.

I appreciate your suggestion Sir. People donated gold to God to protect them in emergencies. COVID-19 is an emergency. I was surprised to read it is really a excellent idea, In-fact God is not taking that gold anywhere. Only human trustees will claim our temple is rich, their temple is poor. God doesn't know anything about this at all.

Land everybody has Dr, Churches, Masjids and Temples. This Non BJP person suggested only gold . If you have that in your mind use that gold money for 90 % of your people. No problem. But use it anyway is the only suggestion. "This gold is kept as water in the pot, never used"

What kind of a doctor are you? Land purchased by religious institutions is used for religious, educational and charitable purposes. But gold is stockpiled without investing anywhere. Please make use of it if there's excess of it. Sad to say we still have educated morons.
