Bengaluru, Jun 8: The high court (HC) expressed indignation at the fact that social media has been creating confusion and doubts in the minds of the people and trying to wedge a divide among the people through communal strategies.

Judge of the high court, Justice R Devadas, expressed these concerns when hearing the allegations against Rihan (19) and Shahbaz (20) from Nipani taluk, Belagavi district, and granting bail to them.

A video of picking watermelons thrown into the drainage had been widely shared in the social media. Basaveshwar Chowk police had arrested the duo after a case was registered against them on April 17 this year. The complainant had claimed that the watermelons were purposefully thrown into the drain. The fruits were removed from there later and sold with the objective of spreading diseases among those who buy these watermelons, it was said.

The judge said that when investigating such cases, the truth behind the allegations should be looked into. He granted conditional bail to the two youths. Advocate for the petitioner had pleaded that section 328 of Indian Penal Code that was invoked in this case is not strong enough. He wanted sections of the law where a provision to grant bail does not exist should be invoked and the accused should be sent behind the bars for ten years.
