Bengaluru, Jun 9: The Election Commission of India has announced biennial election to seven seats of the Karnataka Legislative Council from the Legislative Assembly on June 29.

The biennial elections are being held to fill up the vacancies of seven members, including 5 from Congress and one each from JD(S) and BJP, who will be retiring on June 30.

The term of seven members of the Legislative Council, whose terms are expiring on June 30 are: Naseer Ahmed, Jayamma, M.C. Venugopal, N.S. Bose Raju, H.M. Revanna (all Congress), T.A. Sharavana (JD-S), and D.U. Mallikarjuna (BJP).

The Election Commission, after receiving inputs from Chief Electoral Officer, Karnataka has decided to hold biennial elections to the Karnataka Legislative Council, the notification said.

The notification for elections would be issued on June 11. The last date of making nominations is June 18, while scrutiny of nominations would take place on June 19. The last date for withdrawal of candidatures is June 22.

Polling would be held on June 29 (Monday) from 9 am to 4 pm. Counting of votes would take place on the same day evening after 5 pm.

The poll panel has directed the CEO Karnataka to take adequate measures for close monitoring of the election process by appointing observers to ensure free and fair election.

The Commission has also directed the State Chief Secretary T M Vijaya Bhaskar to depute a senior officer from the State to ensure that the extant instructions regarding COVID-19 containment measures are complied with while making arrangements for conducting the elections.
