Udupi, Jun 18: Deputy Commissioner, G Jagadeesha and Udupi MLA, Raghupathi Bhat set in motion ‘Mask Day’ awareness programme in front of the municipal council office on Thursday. It was held to create awareness on the need to wear masks and maintain social distance.

A procession holding banners was held from the municipal council office under the leadership of the deputy commissioner.

The deputy commissioner said that the campaign against corona is continuous. “About 50% of the spread of the virus can be curbed by wearing masks. The municipal council has already collected Rs 27,000 fine for not wearing masks. The fine will also be collected if the mask is worn in an improper manner. Social distancing is important. Traders should provide facilities for customers to wash their hands in their shops. Udupi is leading among the number of infected. 130 people are undergoing treatment. It is good to maintain distance from people who arrive from other states,” he said.

Udupi MLA Raghupathi Bhat, said that though the district is ahead in the number of infected people, it is in number one position among the recovered people too. “Therefore, people should take precautions and not be worried. Taking precautions and safety measures are important. The Mask Day should not be limited to one day,” he said.

Udupi municipal council commissioner, Anand Kallolikar, assistant executive engineer, Mohan Raj, council members and others were present.
