Udupi, Jun 19: Udupi district deputy commissioner G Jagadeesha has banned the movement of heavy vehicles above 12 tonnes on Agumbe ghats from June 15 to October 15.

In a notification dated June 15, the deputy commissioner stated that the executive engineer, national highways, Mangaluru division have put forth a proposal for the ban as there is heavy rain along the Theerthahalli-Udupi NH169A. “Agumbe Ghat road is narrow and the capacity to withstand weight on both the sides of the road is decreasing. There can be landslides if heavy vehicles ply on the road, obstructing traffic and causing accidents.”

“Therefore, goods vehicles that are heavier than 12 tonnes can ply on alternative routes of Udupi–Brahmavar–Barkur–Shankernarayana– Siddapur–Hosangadi–Hulikal Ghat–Hosanagar–Theerthahalli or Udupi–Karkala–Bajagoli–SK Border–Kerekatte–Shringeri–Shivamogga routes,” he stated in the notification.
