Mangalore: Yakshagana Academy to Confer Honorary Awards at Dharmasthala

Mangalore, Mar 19: Karnataka Yakshagana Bayalata Academy has chosen 20 persons for being conferred the honorary awards of the Academy for the years 2008 and 2009. These awards will be conferred on them at a function to be held at Mahotsava Auditorium of Dharmasthala at 4.30 pm on Sunday March 21, said president of the Academy, Kumble Sundar Rao, at a press conference held here on Wednesday March 17.

These awards will be presented to the chosen artistes by Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari, Dr D Veerendra Heggade, he revealed.

H Subbanna Bhat, Karkee Narayana Hasyagar, Molahally Heriya Naik, Hosahitlu Mahalinga Bhat, Vandse Narayan Ganiga, Ramaiah Rai Mumbai, K Fakira Gerukatte, Madevaiah Nooli, Ka Na Dasachar and Siddanna Channappa Sarasambi have been selected for the awards for the year 2008.

Pertaining to the year 2009, Kadandelu Purushottam Bhat, Peruvadi Narayan Bhat, Matyadi Narasimha Shetty, Dharmashale Mahabaleshwar Bhat, Mukhyaprana Kinnigoly, Sheenappa Rai Sampaje, M K Ramesh Acharya, Khader Sab, K B Jayachandraraja Arasu and Kashibai Dadanatti have been chosen for this coveted award.

The Academy, which is holding its first awards ceremony on Sunday, could not organize the awards function for the year 2008 due to administrative reasons. The honorary award is being given to Dharmashela Mahabaleshwar Bhat posthumously. The state government has given its nod for the institution of an annual award in the name of Parti Subba, known as the father of Yakshagana, which will comprise one lac rupees in cash, he revealed. The honorary awards comprise citation and cash component of Rs 10,000 each.

Chandrashekhar Shetty, member of the Academy, was present at the press conference.
