Mangalore: Poojary Terms Anti Cow Slaughter Bill Draconian, Seeks Withdrawal

Daijworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Mar 23: Former union minister and Congress leader, B Janardan Poojary, has termed the newly passed Anti Cow Slaughter Bill as draconian, and warned that the provisions contained therein will rob the people of  their mental peace. ‘One day, this law can even catch up with you,” he warned Yeddyurappa, addressing a press conference in the city on Monday March 22.

Poojary pointed out that the Supreme Court had not allowed Madhya Pradesh government to enforce a blanket ban on cow slaughter, even after the state tried to implement the law four times. “In several previous judgments, the Supreme Court has clearly held that cattle can be slaughtered. The state government does not seem to have studied these things properly. No one will benefit by looking after the cattle that are old and useless. Caring for the animals that are past their prime, is a very costly affair, and the Supreme Court had pinpointed to the ill affects the total ban, saying that it will have adverse affect on the economic condition of the concerned, and hence had held that cow slaughter can not be banned completely,” Poojary explained.

He claimed that some Hindus in North India consume beef. “Beef is equally required for the body builders and sportspersons. Farmers get six to seven thousand rupees by selling their old bullocks. Now, Yeddyurappa has banned their sale. Will Yeddyurappa pay for feeding and looking after these cattle?” Poojary questioned.  He also pointed to a provision in the said law, which holds that the people in whose homes beef is found are punishable, feeling that this can be a potent weapon for settling scores. “If someone deliberately keeps beef in the house of Yeddyurappa, the Chief Minister can be booked,” he said.

Poojary said that beef is an important component in the daily food of the minorities and dalits, and asked the government not to ruffle the sentiments of these people. He strongly felt that the law is being brought with the specific objective of harassing these people. He also assumed that the BJP, knowing fully well that this law will not stand the test of the Supreme Court, has enacted this law, with the intention of telling the people later, that they had implemented this law, but the Supreme Court had nullified it.

Former MLA, Vijaykumar Shetty, K S M Masood, Congress leaders, Suresh Ballal, Kallige Taranath Shetty, M G Hegde, Arun Coelho, Badruddin, Vishwas Kumar Das etc., were present.

    Beef provides 'good' calories
a Journalist's 12 years spent researching dietary recommendations shows that beef and other red meat have been given "a bad rap." but not as bad as yeddi co have given us. ..next i think they have to ban lamb, sheep, mutton, pork, chicken, fish, rice daal, veggies ..and ask people to eat thier saffron flag, then lets see what hebbettu-nagesh-nayagan- mamu's comments are !!

Poojari makes an interesting point, is it true that such a bill would not survive a Supreme court challenge ?

    Would appreciate any knowledgeable answers.

As for the timing, the BMP elections are due soon in Bangalore, this bill was pushed through on the last day of session in the assembly presumably for votes.

Kumaraswamy did not think this bill could be implemented and referred to it as a gimmick. His father mentioned that the Supreme court has a list of items deemed suitable for human consumption, therefore how can anyone pass a bill outlawing what exists in that list ?

This does appear like it has no chance of becoming a law.

    Mr.Poojary,

Your name does not suit your comments..........before taking sides go and see the animals are slaughtered under horrible conditions and even skinned alive. Eat what you like....but justify the torture and curelty inflicted to animals. Animals are also a minority in front of humans, why dont you support them. They are entitled to live their lives.

Well managed Temples are transferred to Mutts. For what ???? Who got benefit....?????

Secondly many majority people not consuming beef on daily basis. To your info low income people from Muslims,Christians,Hindu ( Dalits ) buying beef at least once in a week.( specially Saturday or Sunday ).

If BJP Govt trying to snatch these poor people luxury, Its called dictatorship. Not Democracy.

Mr.. Poojari rightly said. " this bill can be a potent weapon for settling personal scores " .
Same thing happened in Pakistan. ( Minorities accused for burning Koran ). Which is totally false.

    Nagesh Nayak,

Foreign funds come to India by bank transaction, not hawala. You need not worry about it - the process in a way strengthens India's economy.

Congress has ample schemes for low income people to benefit from. You submit your plea, don't speak on their behalf whose low cost food is being curtailed by Yeddy Govt. You don't seem to be a member of low-income group, as long as you pay the taxes, not evade them by various means, the commodity will be gradually cheap. Not just the items are expensive but Indians' income has too gone up by certain percentage.

I think its time for the masses to decide whats good for them, than the govt deciding for them.
The sufferers from this ban will not be the minorities, but the ones who have taken a liking for it.So U all know as to who is it, otherwise the price of Beef would not have touched sky high.
All the best Mr. Yeddy ,I think its time to go.Bye better luck next time.

hi,Lydia Lobo, Kadri,Congress has leaders who are robbers of low income people . since you are getting foreign funds & not bothered about price rise of day to day essential items like rice, wheat, sugar, petrol & deasil etcc. A low income people are real sufferers. You are praising congress leaders who told common people not to eat pulses & sugar to avoid price rise. Congress is doing day time robbery than helping a low income people. your congress leaders are having enough time to attend marriages by trvelling thru chartered flight. But unfortunately no time to spend with the common people. you are having enough time to chant sonia & rahul bhajans.jai ho.

Well said Poojari Sir, This BJP govt sick with jaundice and they see whole world in yellow (safron) color. As Mr. A.R. Anthulay said earlier if One month cattles cannot be sold for slaughter houses, the peoples who are favoring illogical law will start begging to sell their cows. This will be the truth.

I think this "Beef" and "Cow Slaugher" is mixed up. As far as the slaughtering of "Holy Cow" is concerned, already there exists a ban and implemented to the maximum level. As somany laws are broken every day, there may be few instances of breaking this law too. For that a better plan can be chalked out and see that it is implemented practically.
Here is the question of "Beef" and banning its consumption is not limited or pertaining to Muslims Only. Cleverly/Cunningly people have changed it into a Minority and Majority Issue. Its related to Universal Food Habits of Humanity.
Interestingly the Idea of "Holy Cow" came from the times of Moses and the Jews, against the teaching of Moses, had started it treating as Sacred Animal.(ref Holy Qur'an) Still the Cows and other cattles are breaded and slaughtered all over the world for providing food to the human beings. Even in India we all very well know(including Yeddy Chacha and Co.) that apart from consuming beef, the Hindus too Sacrifice the Bulls, Buffelloes and other cattles to Please the Gods at Temples!
So this ban will never affect exclusively Muslim Community, but it will have its adverse effect on all Human beings. It will have negative impact on our economy also. Infact these types of laws are interference into the Nature's Law and will defenitely result into Environmental Imbalance.

the law is quite draconion.it puts a blanket ban on cow slaughter without even looking into the welfare or compensatary factor to farmers and butchers.this will keep the cops busy searching the fridges of all people suspected of beef eating!they will not have to go far ...the electoral list will be supplied and no guesses who will be searched.the communal elements will get a big boost and will start using this as the new act to promote disharmony.
bjp as a national party has been quite effective.however this policy of anti minorities is the only impediment they face.
communal activities only destroy the fabric of society and turns man into beast.do we want this!!

    Nagesh Nayak,

Congress has leaders who are concerned about low income people hence the bill is not made a law. Even in Karnataka it will not be enacted into law - not due to concern for the poor, but the court will not allow it. If at all it is enacted, that is the doom of BJP in Karnataka, Yeddy is very well aware of this. Passing the bill is just a public stunt to show-off some fake love towards Go-Mata. So, if you have already purchased drums/fire-crackers you better think about finding a customer for them.

Like one reader of Daiji said, when the attempt to project 'Raam' failed, Raam topic got aborted. Very soon go-maata will also be dumped.
