Mangaluru: Renowned Central theatre becomes history as demolition work begins

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Aug 23: The city's famous Central theatre, which was established years ago, much before the arrival of multiplexes, will be a memory now.

Work is under way to demolish the theatre.

College students to families, the theatre holds many memories for movie buffs in and around the city. However, with the arrival of multiplexes and malls, popularity of threatres like Central began to wane.

Central theatre used to be the first choice of movie distributors in Mangaluru. Silver Jubilee of Sandalwood actor Shivarajkumar's movie 'OM' was celebrated in this theatre. Doyen of Kannada cinema Dr Rajkumar was also present on the occasion of the celebration of the silver jubilee.

'Indrajit', a movie starring Rebel Star Ambarish, had run for 100 days in Central theatre. The interesting part is that the owner of the theatre himself was the producer of this movie.

Many Tulu movies were also launched in this theatre. The theatre was closed for public viewing for the past two years. It was also heard that the theatre would being refurbished into a multiplex.

However, now the theatre building is being demolished. As per official sources, a commercial complex would be coming up in its place.

The Talkies "Central" is true to it's name as the location is in the middle surrounded by theatres starting with Jyothi, Platinum, Amrut, Roopavani, Ramakaanti, Balaji, New Chitra and ending with Prabhat.

As far as my memory goes back I remember I watched my first movie in Central Talkies was Haathi Mere Saathi in the late 60's. My Mom had taken us children to watch the movie. Thereafter I watched many movies when I was young. Some of the memorable movies I watched were Dharmendra starrer film Ankhen, Navin Nischal/Zeenat Aman starrer film Dhund, Dharmendra/Tanuja starrer film Di Chor, Mehmood in double role, film Do Phool. If I am not mistaken I watched the film Jawaani Diwaani in that theatre by bunking my college lecture in 1973. All these happy moments are still fresh in my memory. The 'Golden Era' will never come back and only remain in the computer called Brain.

There were old Hindi and South Indian films played every year in the late 70's and early 1980's as part of SMRITI Film festival, sponsored by Udayavani. This was a regular feature for around 15 years in Central theatre

If not mistaken it was the first movie theatre in Mangalore to be centrally air-conditioned though they stopped it after a few years due to lack of power supply n maintenance cost. Still remember as child loved running to the balcony where no staircase was used n think the path as a small upward hill. Mostly used to watch evening shows on Sunday n before that used to spend time in the opposite Town hall park. Wonderful nostalgic moments n feelings stored in the memory box.

Going to a Movie was a Holiday in those says. When we were very young some selected movies which my parents liked ( mainly actors ) Amitabh Bacchan , Raajkumar , Kalpana ( for my mom ) , In Hindi Rekha . Dad would declare a movie outing which was normally Matnee show on Saturday. So Friday evening onwards no sleep , what to wear and what to eat was going in our mind. Saturday it was 1/2 day school and we used to take permission and run home. Our school was like 2kms from home and we used to run like a Horse. Mom as usuals in her best with Saree , Dad like as usual late , 3 Kids , Mom and Dad on our Yezdi bike gone for a movie. In movie I used to emulate a hero and blow few punches on my brother’s head and he used to cry without sense of environment . Dad pulled my ears and even I cried. I was feeling when I will grow up soon the . Movie internal Popcorn and Torino or Campa Cola . Normally it was all shared as I can see now dad was saving money for later. After movie to a Hotel to eat of best and tasty Masaldosa and Icecream.

Now , I cry why I grew up ? Need more of bygone days.. can I get them back . Can’t I sit between my parents anymore . ?

As a 14 year old boy, I remember watching a movie in Central theatre in 1964, along with my cousin who treated me with a movie, dinner in the nearby Tajmahal hotel and then a whole night Yakshagana, all in one single day! That was my First movie and Yakshagana experience, that's why it's still fresh in my memory, after all these years. Thank you dear cousin, thank you Central.
