Mangaluru: Street vendors hold protest, condemn MCC eviction drive

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (ANK)

Mangaluru, Aug 24: Street vendors on Monday August 24 staged a protest at Kavoor junction against the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) opposing the civic body’s eviction drive of petty shops.

Member of street vendors’ committee B K Imthiyaz said, "This is a violation of Street Vendors’ Act 2014. A separate body has been formed for street vendors in which there are street vendors and officials. The eviction drive was uninformed and not even discussed. Early in the morning at 5:30, MCC officials conducted the drive. Several street vendors are now in deep trouble as most of them are aged who are earning their livelihood running their business on this street since the last three decades.

“Due to coronavirus lockdown, several people lost their jobs. During this troublesome period, snatching these elderly people’s livelihood is highly condemnable. The MCC did not show concern towards street vendors by providing kits or medical help. We will file complaint at Kavoor police station against this eviction drive and also submit a memorandum to deputy commissioner Dr Rajendra.

“The MCC has been urging us to shift to Kavoor market. But these street vendors are asked to pay in lacs for the market. From where these street vendors can pay such huge amounts,” he questioned.

Street vendors who lost their shops in the eviction drive were present.

I recommend to Please google or ask officials to visit Soul Al Jubail market in Sharjah, UAE
We need a proper system/ infrastructure built for all this small vendors. Few years back even we had a very shabby foul smelly market in the center of the city.
As we all want progress and focus how our city should look it is important there is a proper set up to ensure we have ultimate fruits, vegetables, flowers, fish and poultry market under one roof dividing the stalls strategically. This also would make it a authentic travel and shopping experience to locals and NRIs. Govt need to focus on this. Kavoor or Bondel is a place that should have this set up first as it is away from the central location of Mangalore. Many people staying in this areas will find it convenient.

Being in Kirem you can not comment on MCC action at Kavoor Junction without knowing the actual fact.
Have you personally visited this area. Mainly fish selling area and the fish vendors port the foul smelling waste water on the road. People cannot move in this area. Bad smell is emmited and nearby shops and flat owners facing them cannot bear the smell.
Additionally MCC has built market very close to that location around 500 meters and these vendors are not ready to move there for the very reason that they want to remain at the junction only while giving the illogical excuse.
If they move to market dedicated for them and do their business outside the market I can accept their excuse if they are forced to move.
Moreover, this junction is on Airport main road.
Apart from this when MCC do their work people have problem and when they don't do the task then same people complain saying our officials don't do the task.
Everyone has the right to live that does not mean he can do anything anywhere he wishes.
If someone setup a shop just in front of your gate or close to your gate just because it is not your land and he discharge waste water will you accept it. You should not have any issues, should you?

Let MCC demolish all the buildings which are built on the road. Please dont be under impression that those who are staying in city is great and rest are useless. We too stay in city...not only in kirem. We too pay the same taxes what you pay.... what you pay for internet i too pay for the same so i can comment sitting from anywhere just like how you do ! You want only comforts saying airport that and this....will you give them food and clothing and look after their expenses..?? When you are not ready to give anything... where these people will go ?? Life is not permanent and so as luxuries and comforts..

All Indians have the right earn for living.
But, it doesn't mean that we can put up shops anywhere and everywhere.
They should get a designated area for vending.

While the condition of street side vendors is understandable, where is the rule of law. Street vendors all over the city of Mangalore are a nuisance for the public to walk around and there needs to be some discipline. It applies even to the posh shop owners who encroach the public space on the roads which the corporation needs to demolish with the same yard stick which is used for street vendors. Law should be the same for every one.

Municipality better need to regularise this by constructing smart small sized shops for street vendors at certain locations without disturbing much to locals and on lottery basis allot them for these vendor, good for them and it would helpful to poor people who sometimes rely on them. Municipality could also get little revenue out of it with limited charges.

Dear MCC & other Law enforcing agencies,
These kind of issues needs to be addressed with utmost sensitivity. Remember these vendors need to feed their family and they are not rich people who can twist the law (exploit the law) with money power. Please please think twice before destroying livelihoods of people specially at this time of pandemic. At least give them some advance notice (at least 3-6 months)

What about street vendors (entries) at the Kankannady market and Valencia area? No one to question them. In fact the eatries at Valencia also use parking place meant for vechiles. At the town hall area the footpath used for street vendors. Looks like regular hafta not given to MCC official, if regular hafta given to officials no problem then.

Very good initiative people.....please go ahead. Why govt.officials create problems to these hard workes? Let them earn something and let them live and eat peacefully. They work for their daily bread. They work for their living..PLEASE DONT TEMPT OR PUSH THEM TO INDULGE IN SOME OTHER ACTIVITIES WHICH IS NOT GOOD FOR SOCIETY AS WELL AS FOR officials......Concerned authorities should demolish illegal buildings which are built on roads in Mangaluru obstructing for the development...
