It's Official: Sania Mirza to Marry Pakistani Cricketer Shoaib Malik

Hyderabad, March 29 (IANS) Indian tennis star Sania Mirza's family Monday confirmed that she was all set to marry Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik.

An Indian news channel quoted Sania's father Imran Mirza as saying that the reports of her proposed marriage with Malik were true. According to the channel, he said that the marriage would take place in a month and that the couple would settle down in Dubai after tying the knot.

Imran said that both Sania and Malik would continue to represent their countries in their respective games.

However, Sania's father or any family member did not come out of the house to speak to mediapersons waiting outside to get a confirmation of the news first aired on a Pakistani television channel.

According to Geo News, Shoaib Malik's mother met the family of Sania, and sought Sania for her son. The channel claimed that Sania's family has accepted the proposal and the two families are all set to conduct the engagement of the two.

The channel even claimed that the engagement ceremony was expected to take place next month.

The news of Sania's proposed marriage with Malik came two months after she called off her engagement to childhood friend Sohrab Mirza, citing "incompatibility".

Six months after the engagement took place here amid much fanfare, Sania decided to part ways with Sohrab.

Interestingly, Shoaib Malik was also engaged to a girl from this southern Indian city a few years ago but he later called it off. The family of the girl had even claimed that he had married her but the Pakistani star denied this.

Malik had said in January 2008 that his marriage plans with Ayesha Siddiqui ended because both families could not reach an understanding on certain issues.

However, the girl's family claimed that the they entered the wedlock through 'nikah' over telephone in 2002. Ayesha's father M.A. Siddiqui had even threatened to sue Malik for cheating and demanded him to give a formal divorce.

Malik was also quoted by Pakistani media as saying that Ayesha was not the girl he met in Dubai and that her family cheated him by sending a photograph of another girl.

Malik had reportedly met Ayesha in Dubai and they decided to marry. The Pakistani cricket team was given a grand reception by Ayesha's parents at their residence here when the team toured India in 2005.

Interestingly, Ayesha had not come out at the reception and did not even meet Shoaib, saying she was down with some allergic problem.

The Court ruling of pre-marital sex and live in relationship is violated by Sania Mirza. The geo-tv channel, I am not sure the news is correct from Geo channel or bla, bla, if so she has the right to marry anybody she likes and can live in Pakistan or anywhere they like. Also the proposed has the right to divorce her at any time. Cricketer Mr. Imran Khan, married Jamima and divorced. Now she is living in England and He is in Pakistan supporting Taliban’s.

Why can't we be optimists? Maybe she might bridge and reduce indo-pak tension because she's indian and her husband paki.

What about muttiah muralitharan (sri lankan) who's has a wife who's indian tamil? Technically, this too should be a conflict of interest, considering the fact that some tamil sri-lankans were sympathizers of LTTE.

Saniya could have chosen Irfan Pathan,Yusuf Pathan,Mohd.Kaif, Zaheer Khan or Munaf Patel in cricket field. She could have chosen handsome Bollywood muslim actors in film field. She could have chosen boy from Powerful and influencial Muslim Minister's family.(Political field). She rejected everyone and took a very bad decision by accepting Pakistani's hand in this crisis time when Indo-Pak relation spoiled because of Terrorism from Pakistan. Shoiab Malik is the person who ditched Indian girl (Hyderabadi girl) .

I felt sad about Sania getting married to a Paki. After reading all the comments here i felt more sad about some muslim persons comments. We are not sad that she is marrying a muslim, we are sad that she is getting marry to a Paki , our 60 year old enemy. All muslims are brothers, i agree, then what you feel about all Indians? Religion comes first or nation.

Most of the Indian muslims love pakistan as their heavenly place on earth after Makka-Madeena. Today i got real confirmation by these comments that most of the Indian muslims may ditch our country if they get a chance.

    Be Indian. Love India.

This raises big question mark why person like SRKhan, Sania Mirza, Javed Akthar, MF Hussain have more love towards muslim country than thier own INDIA. Are they first INDIAN then thier religion or religion first then INDIAN????

If at all India and Pakistan wanted to solve the differences, it shall not take more than 60 years. By having differences and friction both Indian and Pakistan governments can divert the attention of common people like us and justify spending money on arms and ammunitions which will not be used in their life time.

Very childish comments here. When deciding to marry Shoaib, Sania and family would have thought of all the pros and cons of the decision. Why we have to interfere in others' personal affairs ? Again, Sania cannot marry according to our tastes, she has chosen her life partner. I am sure she didn't decide to marry Shoaib based on his nationality, she has definitely decided based on his personality and other compatibility issues. We should be patriotic but our patriotism should not drive us to idiocy.

Those who think that Sania & Malik will settle in Dubai after marriage, please note that UAE does not give citizenship or even permanent residency to foreigners. Not even to those who purchased property there. At one time it was the enticement of real estate moguls but the govt ruled out permanent residency against purchase of property.

As such, Sania and Malik's stay in Dubai will be for the duration of their visa. They may have to take up either employment visa or invest in some business thus get entitled to an investor's visa. In any case they may have to return to one country - either Pakistan or India. Many Indians married to Pakistanis in the past are torn apart between these two countries because of legal formalities.

But what can we do if Congress is so hell bent on pushing India back to the past they are already ruled by an Italian and respect characters like Dawood Imbrahim, Afzal Guru, Kasab and humiliate Indians like Amitabh. Some of our Indian celebrities are fond of Pakistani cricketers as if there is dearth of good and famous guys in India. In the past our actresses such as Zeenat Aman and Reena Roy went after them. Reena Roy even converted to Islam and got married to Mohsin Khan or whatever is name is. She then returned to India empty handed and I don’t think she would ever want to go back to that country even in her wildest dream. She was not even able to get her child, thanks to Pak law. Sometime back, a Hindu girl from Kerala met a Pakistani in Russia and got converted before she married him but the Pak government was not willing to issue her visa.

Mirza family should have considered Shoaib Malik’s past history of flirting with another Indian girl whom he married and did not divorce till now. Although he denies that he married the girl, the girl’s father would not tell lies about his daughter marrying the cricketer.

Pakistani cricketers are known to run after rich and beautiful women. I hope Sania is fully aware that the step she is going to take would take her to a right direction. India and Pakistan are poles apart as far as lifestyle and freedom are concerned. I hope she would not get suffocated from the way they live in Pakistan. Many Indian Muslims went to that country thinking it would be a heaven for them but it turned out to be a living hell.

What the politician say about this marriage? Do this Pakistani politicians accept Sania as Pakistani and give her their citizenship?
The biggest question is, what about our BJP, VHP, BD, SS, SRS and the Sangh Parivar....? Do they accept this relationship and do they allow Shoaib Malik a Pakistani to come to India and perform his marriage with an Indian...? If it was a commen persons wedding, then all these political parties would have created a big show in both the countries....!

I hope Sania's marriage with Shoaib Malik would not end like Imran Khan's with Jemima-who were culturally & religiously brought up in different worlds which could have been the contributing factor. But here they both belong to the same religion & culturally are not too different either. If they live in different countries other than Pakistan their chances of leading a healthy & normal life are better.

Its a totally wrong decission by the Mirza family. She may have to pay a very huge price for making a wrong decission. She forgot Indian were best. Now she has to play tennis wearing burkha or else talibanis will force her to do so. I have seen celebrities marriages are in turbulance. Pakistanis have a very orthodox culture and how Sania will adjust to her new home itself is a million dollar question. Whilst I wish her happy married life, I have my own doubts that this marriage would not be solemnized. Finger crossed.

Indeed marriages are made in heaven. This one for sure was made in the Indian sub-continent. However, the limelight that Sania so owes to our country called India and sensitivities of one billion irrelevant population should have been considered a little bit. India does not have cricketing ties with Pakistan for a reason.

A dozen terrorists trained and guided real-time by their handlers in Pakistan army unleashed mayhem in Mumbai. Many innocent lives were lost. Pakistan continues to be in denial. Rightly so. A country of billion population will dare not punish Pakistan. We just do not have that gut to take action to protect our ourselves. In the meantime, wish you a happy married life Sania.
