Mangalore, Apr 16: An elephant named ‘Durgaparameshwari’, at the Dr Shivarama Karanth Biological Park in Pilikula, gave birth on Wednesday April 14, thus bringing the number of elephants in the park to three.

Durgaparameshwari, aged about 30, was brought from Madikeri along with male elephant Prashanth. The baby elephant will be named with the help of sponsors, who will have to come forward to look after or adopt it.

The calf is the centre of attraction in the park and is being given special care by the staff.

“The birth of the calf shows the potential of the park”, said Jayaprakash Bhandary, director of the park, expressing happiness at the increase in the number of animals in the park. The park was started in 2001 and is one of the largest parks in the state.

“The park is run by a trust and is not allotted funds for its development by the government. The park has marked the fastest development as compared to others and most of the animals have increased in number through breeding”, he added.

“The breeding of rare species including mouse deer, barking deer, and black buck has also taken place and it is a matter of pride to say that the park is maintained in a good condition so that rare animal groups also breed”, he added and thanked the sponsors and donors for supporting the development of the park.

The elephant calf is an additional attraction for te visitors who can spend an enjoyable time in Pilikula park along uwith lions, tigers, panthers and deer playing with their young ones along with more than 400 varieties of wildlife.

Its nice to hear the News of the new calf. But the photograph shows the elephant has been chained. Please remove these chains and lets let them live freely in the park.Pilikula authorities do make note of this. Thank you.

This is really good news. It is very difficult to breed elephants in captivity, success rate is very low. In this we should appreciate the efforts of the park trust. Keep up the good work and protect rare species.

It looks like elephant is feeling hot, it needs water to play with its child.

I have seen water being sprayed(frequently) on elephants through hose in summer in Washington DC Zoo, when they are not in pond.

Nice to see more new addition to Pilikula Biological park, now new elephant Calf after 3 new lion cubbs, all of them are very cute.
