Mangalore, Apr 16: “We should desist from resorting to undue pomp, show and glorification of our culture. It would be prudent instead, to work to carry forward the essence of our culture and traditions to the future generation,” felt veteran writer and scholar, Prof Amrut Someshwar.

He was speaking after inaugurating the ‘Bisu Parba’ programme organized by Bharatiya Vidyabhavan under the aegis of Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy, in association with Tulu Aisiri in the city on Thursday April 15.

“There has been a misconception that culture belongs to only a few sections of the society. This is not true. It is very important to develop a sense of gratitude in life. Without this quality, life in a society does not have any meaning. For example, as a gesture of gratitude in exchange for feeding water to them, coconut trees give us tender coconuts,” he said.

Someshwar also held himself against the recent activities which work to discourage agricultural activity. He exhorted the people and the leaders to get engaged with activities that encourage agriculture. They should also impart knowledge about and show the importance of retaining, observing and celebrating the festivals and occasions like ‘Bisu Parba’ to the younger generation, he urged.

Bharathiya Vignana Bhavan honorary joint secretary, Prof G R Rai, presided. Lecturer of St Aloysius College, Dr Vishwanath Badikana, delivered a special address. Tulu Sahitya Academy member, Ratnavati Baikady, was the chief guest.

Tulu Aisiri president, Dr Mohandas Bhandary, welcomed. Secretary, Dr Rajasri, presented the programme.

Thank you Mr. Amrit Someshwar, a genuine scholar and cultural icon. It is nice to hear sane words from good people in the midst of so much garbage and celebration of gutter culture one sees especially in the coastal districts.
