Two Explosive Devices Found at Bangalore Stadium

Bangalore, April 18 (IANS) Two crude bombs were found close to the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium here Sunday, a day after two low intensity blasts there left 16 people injured.

One bomb was found near a bus stop close to Gate No 1, the main gate of the stadium, at around 9 a.m. and the other was hidden in a metal pole supporting an advertisement billboard outside the stadium, Bangalore city police commissioner Shankar Bidari told reporters.

Both the devices have been defused, he said.

Bidari said his men will now search the nearly 1,000 billboards around the stadium for any explosives.

"As a precautionary measure we will search all the billboards and also remove them. There are around 1,000 billboards in the area," Bidari said.

He said no timer device was found with the two bombs discovered Sunday.

"We will complete checking all the billboards today," Bidari said.

Huge billboards surround the 40,000-capacity stadium in view of the crowds gathering there for the IPL matches.

The stadium is located in the centre of the city and has the popular shopping area M.G. Road on one side and Cubbon Road on the other.

Its main gate, near which a bomb was found Sunday morning, faces Cubbon Park which attracts hundreds of people every day, apart from the regular morning/evening walkers, making it a strategic location to advertise.

The two blasts Saturday evening had delayed the start of the Royal Challengers Bangalore-Mumbai Indian tie by an hour.

The police are sanitising the stadium area as both the semi-finals of the IPL are to be played there April 21 and 22.

One of the blasts Saturday took place at Gate No 12, in which 16 people, including four policemen, received minor injuries while a security volunteer suffered head injuries. He is being treated at Mallya Hospital, about two km away, from the stadium.

The second blast was at Anil Kumble circle, less than half a kilometre from the stadium. None was injured.

An explosive was found later in the stadium even as the IPL match was on and defused. Timer devices were attached to the three bombs. .

What lessons Bangalore learnt from July 2008 serial blasts which rocked the city?. Probably none.1200 security persons were on guard the stadium, still five explosives devises were placed at key points. Home Minister V.S.Acharya insists there was no security lapse and sees the hand of 'mischief makers'. Two bombs exploded on 17th. Another bomb was found near Gate No.8 timed to go off at 8 p.m., was found and defused. Two bombs were found on 18th, one near Gate No.1 and another 200 meters from the stadium. The police have allowed the match to go on without sanitising the area risking the lives of 45000 people inside the stadium and the players from India and other countries.

This is nothing but a security lapse, sorry state of affairs of the administration and casual approach both by the Home Minister and Commissioner of Police,

It is noteworthy to note that V.S.Acharya was in Udupi busy inaugurating festival of Big Bazar. Chief Minister was away in Hassan. When No.1 of the State was away from the Headquarters, it was the duty of No.2 in the cabinet to remain in Bangalore. This itself suggest how serious these leaders are about law and order. Sri V.S.Acharya, immediately on hearing the news, decided to go to Bangalore and was on his way to the Airport to board the plane. A wise decision. However he returned back to Udupi as he felt that it was minor incident. Alas a foolish decision. Final result: IPL shifted both the semi finals to Mumbai citing security reasons.

Security was very slack even after spending Crores to keep the stadium terror proof. The explosive devises were found on the open external walls of the stadium gates and that was a total security failure.

Sack Bidri because its clearly intelegance failure. In this high profile IPL match police should have kept close watch on ground & checked properly. How can one keep 3 bombs in one ground in presence of so many police?

Stop doing the guess work. Police and inteliigence must do a thorough job and find out who exactly are behind this act. Dont blame any group or organisation until and unless the police has clear and clever evidence. People, organisations behind such acts, irrespective of their belief, ideology and affiliations must be punished and exposed. United we stand and devided we fall.
