Bengaluru: Excise department reports 3.38% more profit despite poor liquor sales

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (MS)

Bengaluru, Feb 3: Compared to the last fiscal year the income of the excise department is more this year. Though there is a major downfall in the sales of IML and beer sales, there is appreciation in the revenue of the department.

Compared to the last fiscal year the department reported an increase of 3.38% in the net profit. The revenue between April and January 31 was Rs 18,689 crore. Meanwhile, in the last fiscal year, the revenue recorded was Rs 18,078 crore and this year it is Rs 610 crore.

The target for 2020-21 is Rs 22,700 crore. Last year it was 20,950 crore. KSBCL has sold over 509.19 cases of beer in 2019-20. But in 2020-21 it has sold only 472.69 lac cases.

Beer sales have reached a nadir in the present fiscal year. In 2020-21 only 180.16 lac cases were sold. In the last fiscal 241.78 lac cases were sold. Therefore, the deficit recorded is -25.49.

The reason for the increase in revenue of excise is mainly due to the increase in the additional excise tax on all slabs of IML. From March 25 to May 7 all the wine outlets were closed due to coronavirus pandemic. This affected the income of the excise department greatly.

In the third trimester of 2020-21, revenue of excise department was Rs 16,405 crore while for the same period in 2019-20 the income was 16,218 crore.
