Belagavi: Minister says those owning TVs, bikes not eligible for BPL cards, draws flak

Daijiworld Media Network - Belagavi (SP)

Belagavi, Feb 15: Food and civil supplies minister Umesh Katti has said that people having large landholdings, and those who have television sets, bikes and refrigerators at their homes will not be eligible for BPL ration cards. The statement has stirred a hornet's nest. Many are pointing out that television sets and bikes that have become things of necessity are now found in the houses of even poor families. They have started questioning how far is the minister justified in making such statements.

Speaking at Belagavi, Katti had said that to be eligible for BPL benefits, the beneficiaries should not be holding over five acres of land, they should not own fridges, bikes and televiision sets, and that government and quasi-government officials and those having annual income of over Rs 1.2 lac are ineligible to get BPL cards.

He had asked those people who are ineligible but are holding the cards to return them to the government. "Time till March 31 has been given for returning such illegal cards. A survey will be conducted for identifying illegal BPL cards to cancel them," he had stated.

Many have warned the government that if it undertakes such drastic measures, it will face strong reaction. When his response was sought by the media, Katti refused to respond to questions.

Leaders of the opposition have expressed resentment at Katti's statement. Some leaders of his own party have also criticised Katti's statement. Former food and civil supplies minister, U T Khader, said that providing food is the duty of the government and stressed that it is wrong to frame rules and cancel the cards. BJP leader, Somashekhar, also said that even the poor buy bikes and television sets by raising loans and it is improper to cancel such cards.

Bpl and caste certificates were given by taking bribe. In Dubai one of my neighbor is having big business but he took s,t. Certificate and gave his children good education on tax payers money. We were hiring a texi since 15 years.... he also got bpl card. He got his own texi and his children are studying in English medium school. Now our ministers wants reservations for their caste.....they acres of land, money in banks. Are they are below poverty line. Instead of giving facility everyone wants facilities on tax payers money.

TV, Motor bikes and Fridge are necessities of life in the present century and not luxurious life; so you cannot label them as rich/luxury and most of the poor people bought the same thru loans.

Its an eye opening step by government. Many of APL eligible card holder having BPL card because of bribe dynasty. The best solution is, cancel APL & BPL, make it uniform card for all with limited free/partial paid supply. As much government release free stuffs, peoples became lazy. Now a days, we are not getting labors due this free supply of rice & all. Any how government giving old age pension, widow pension, handicap pension & many more. Also central government already given Ayushman Bharat Yojana for medical assistance. Still why we need APL & BPL slabs. APL card holder are living standard life not because of government, its because of their self hard work & dedication. But most of BPL holder personnel wasting their money on bad habits, because they know that government will feed them by free rice & etc..

True, poor people buy used fridges and bikes. Now govt wants to scrap 15 year old vehicles. Who buys old vehicles at low price? Rich change theirs every year or alternate year! Manufacturers and dealers made our politicians happy! Now slowly some bhakthas are opening eyes looking at unbearable price hike during this pandemic.

It is high time the government starts putting an end to the misuse of government funds to provide benefits to BPL card holders. People who genuinely are poor should get the benefit. I know many people who have swanky cars which cost 10 lakh upwards having BPL cards. Government has to draft rules saying the following families are ineligible for BPL cards : 1. Having annual income of more than Rs 3 lakh. 2. Having 4 wheeler which is not commercial registered. 3. Having a house larger than 1500 sqft 4. Having non agricultural land more than 10 cents. 5. Having agricultural land more than 50 cents. 6. Family members are working abroad (NRI's) 7. Total deposits in banks is more than 5 lakh. (This is loans minus deposits) 8. Family members having government permanent jobs (Government jobs give pay which is as per recommendations of Pay commission, hence cannot be classified as having low income) These are just my suggestions, the limits can be modified after studying the feasibility.

There are few representatives they don't open their mouth in assembly as well as in parliament. But you atleast showed your IQ. Keep it up.
