Bantwal, Jul 6:
The nationwide call for the ‘bandh’ opposing the recent price hike of petroleum products got a good response across the taluk with shops remaining closed throughout the day on Monday July 5.

Government offices remained open with a few staff.  Both private and KSRTC stalled their bus services and this disrupted general life.  The remote villages also witnessed good response.

The city centre of B C Road was deserted except a few auto rickshaws.  Schools and colleges were closed as the strike affected transport services.

Voluntary services:

A few youth who had to spend their day at home owing to the strike volunteered to clean up the neighbourhood.

The youth of Punjalkatte, near here, undertook a cleanliness drive around the bus stand and in the locality.

The local residents of Navoor cleared the muck from open gutters and undertook patch-up work on the pot-holed rural road under Navoor gram panchayat.  SDPI activists cleared the wild vegetation that had grown on the old bridge at Panemangalore.
