Mangalore: Poojary Demands Legal Action Against Perpetrators of Bandh

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Jul 7: “The Supreme Court had banned bandhs in 2002 itself, as they result in losses to the public property, commercial, industrial and other ventures. As BJP, its alliance partners, and the communist parties, had organized countrywide bandh on July 5 in violation of this verdict, the union government should file cases against them in the Supreme Court,” urged veteran Congress leader, Janardan Poojary. He was addressing a press conference at the Press Club here on Tuesday July 6.

He said no organizations or governments are vested with the right to call for a bandh. He wanted Supreme Court to take suo motu cognizance of the issue and intervene in the matter, if no public interest litigations or cases are filed against the parties to recover Rs 30,000 crore loss the country has suffered, from the concerned. He also felt that the Congress party should have moved a breach of privilege motion against the state government, as the ministers, MPs and legislators had actively participated in the bandh. “The legislature session was adjourned as the BJP MLAs had participated in the bandh. The state has lost Rs 3,000 crore as a result of the bandh. The Chief Minister must be made to reimburse this loss,” he demanded.

He noted that the NDA government that was in power at the centre had increased the prices of petroleum products 25 times between 1998 and 2004. “But, the Congress party has failed to highlight this information and encash this to its advantage,” he lamented. He blamed the state government of violating the Supreme Court directives in implementing cow slaughter ban act in the state, creating problems for the Lokayukta, State Human Rights Commision and Minorities Commission.

He felt that the state government should have lowered its taxes on petroleum products, which is the highest among the southern states, to provide relief to the citizens facing problems because of the price rise.

When the pressmen suggested to him to file a suit on his own, Poojary said that he will not be able to do so because of lack of power. Party leaders, Harikrishna Bantwal, Suresh Ballal, Kallige Taranath Shetty and Arun Coelho were present at the press conference.

No doubt BB is detrimental in the interest of common man especially working class poor more particularly daily wage earners. However, comparing BB loss to loan mela which was introduced by Poojary when he was MOS for finance in Congress rule in late eighties is a sheer foolishness.Loan melas were then introduced by Poojary during Rajiv Gandhi rule was with good intention and helping the rural poor especially agrcultural labourers, landless labourers,artisons,SC//STs of the soceity.

The amount of loan was meagre and mostly of Government sponsored schemes benificiaries being from BPL segment. It is pertinent to note that till then these class were hesitent to enter the banks for seeking loans for their needs due to the apathy of bankers. So it was the need of the time to accelerate the social economic growth of down trodden masses. The DRI loan scheme was to be the most useful scheme which was targetted the poorest of the poor fixing benchmark limit for achieving the target by banks.

However even today many banks have failed to reach this achievable taget simply for the apathy. No body can deny that Poojary is responible for inducing the poor and down trodden to enter banks to seek loans .

Now ,as regarding write off the bad loans granted during loan melas which constitute a micrscopic meagre sum compared to huge sum of crores of rupees being written off by banks on account of big entreprenuers and industrial houses without making known their names to the public.

Poojary has forgotten his LOAN MELAs.
I agree some action must be taken against any Bandh as we the public are the loosers like we lost money in Poojaris Loan Melas. Also request Poojary to ask the Center to take action against the Bandh Called by Maoists.

Poojary Saab is speaking about loss of public money ? Who will account for the Rs.5000 crores written off in the 1990s by Natioanlised banks due loans given in the Loan Melas ? Present value of that 5000 crores is also about 30000 crores. So Balance sheet for Congress and BJP is tallied !!!( at the cost of general public)

    Correct
Tens of thousand manhours are lost. Huge Rs 30,000 crosres loss to the nation! Someone MUST be held responsible for the loss and made to pay for it.
Today, calling bandh has become a fancy for political parties. THIS MUST BE STOPPED Otherwise people are put to lots of inconvenience.
