Mangalore, Jul 8: While heavy rains continued to batter Karnataka coast, the meteorological department has predicted the intensity of rain to continue for two more days. City-bound flights from gulf countries continued to face hurdles for the third day in succession. The Air India Express flight from Kuwait, which reached here at 7.20 am on Wednesday, was not given clearance for landing in view of poor visibility. Sources in the airport said that the flight was diverted to Kozhikode, and then landed here at around 11 am.

On Wednesday, intermittent rains coupled with overcast conditions turned into heavy downpour in the evening. Good rains were reported from Subrahmanya, Sullia, Bantwal, Udupi etc. Puttur received normal rains with sunny weather in the evening. While heavy downpour has created problems for the people with fields in low-lying areas in planting their seedlings, the areca nut farmers fear the reappearance of the dreaded rotting disease.

After lightning struck a house at Kerady, owned by Bhaskar Shetty in Kundapur taluk, electric and electronic equipments and several other things were destroyed on Wednesday. The loss in this incident has been estimated at around five lac rupees. A house belonging to Sundari in Tenkanidiyoor in Udupi crashed to the ground because of rains, while Lakshmi, a resident of Lakshminagar in the town suffered losses after a falling branch of a tree partially destroyed her home.
