Mangaluru: Don Bosco Hall getting facelift without hurting roots

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Apr 21: Don Bosco Hall in the city that has given impetus to Konkani, Tulu, Beary, Kannada and other language programmes for the last seven decades, is being renovated at a cost of Rs two crore, duly taking care not to disturb its original look. The hall will present itself in a new, fresh, design.

Don Bosco Hall took birth in 1943 through Konkani Nataka Sabha. The theatre was backed by the concept of religious achievement backed by moral values and lifestyle through plays. The hall has provided opportunities for plays, musical programmes, Yakshagana, different dance forms etc. It also gets credit for being the first ever theatre in coastal Karnataka.

The hall has 650 seats and a spacious stage. There are provisions to fix all the arrangements to be made in advance for a play. It also has makeup room, temporary rest room among others. The hall will get granite flooring and new fans and lights in place of the old ones.

Doon Bosco Hall is unique in many ways. Its stage is made of wood and the stage stands directly atop the makeup room. Therefore it has facility to show wherever necessary, that a person is emerging out of the ground if that is needed in Yakshagana, plays etc. The artists are brought up with the help of rotary wheel. In the past, this tactic was used to show appearance of God suddenly. For the last some years, this arrangement was not working and now it is also being repaired.

Plastering, roof work, parking space, air-conditioning etc are planned as part of the renovation.

Don Bosco Hall is a place of high repute. It is a Hall that was initiated by the freputable Mangaloreans who had deep interest in the Christian Community of Mangalore. The Albuquerque family alobg with the Capuchins of Mangalore as well as the Diocese have worked very hard for this Dramatic Hall to grow and prosper. The Hall needs a face lift and the money that is invested for new face lift will go a long way for the growth and prosperity of this reputed facility where so many good occasions have taken place. We strngly recommend a suitable face lift.

I think facelift not solve the problem. It's located at very congested place in the heart of city. It is not possible to provide basic amenities of growing population. It difficult to park even ten vehicle. It's better to construct spacious Hall away from this congested location.

I have known Don Bosco Hall from The Time it started. I have attended several functions over there. It is good to know that it is being renovated which is a prime need. It was found that The Hall did not provide parking places for vehicles which was a major hurdle. It is of prime importance that parking lots are provided as otherwise it would be difficult for people with cars to attend any function.

For some local people these kind old dilapidated buildings and tiled roof houses seems emotional. For young generation and someone coming from advanced cities like singapore, New york these looks like a eye sore. Mangalore town needs drastic infrastructure upgradation into modern buildings, waterfront restaurants, marine drive, planned footpaths and roads. Change is inevitable.

Don Bosco Hall is a landmark community hall for the last seventy years giving chance to conduct so many Konkani musical shows (especially Wilfy nights), marriage functions and 100's of other events. It's a good development to have a face lift to this hall to give a new look and attraction. We the catholic community are proud to witness this hall remain for generations to come. Thanks to the management and board of directors.

I am so glad to hear the managers of the Don Bosco Hall have made effort to preserve the original look while renovating. Our district has lost so many heritage buildings - churches, temples, mosques, etc - because the planners/builders did not understand the value of preserbing the structures for future generations. Thank you, folks!

Being an ardent follower of morality plays, Don Bosco Hall holds the districts onlyy capital for religious plays. Until recently when they decided to hold weddings and otherr events, the building stood tall for all the konkani events for the generations. May peace prevail.
