Mangaluru Bishop Peter Paul issues guidelines for weddings, funerals during curfew till May 4

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Apr 22: The state government on Tuesday imposed a weekend curfew and night curfew across the state to contain the surge in coronavirus cases from April 21 to May 4. The night curfew was imposed between 9 pm to 6 am starting Wednesday while the weekend curfew will be in effect between 9 pm on Friday till 6 am on Monday.

With the state government issuing guidelines to contain the spread of Covid-19 which became applicable from 9 pm on April 21 to 6 am on May 4, Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, bishop of Mangalore diocese, has issues specifications to be followed at the Catholic places of worship in the diocese.

Bishop Dr Peter Paul Saldanha

In a letter addressing the parishioners falling under diocese of Mangalore, he said, “Since the guidelines apply to our places of worship too, kindly follow them. Please note the following specifications.

“All the public religious places of worship shall be closed for the devotees except for wedding and funeral services until May 4.

“Wedding and funeral services can be conducted inside the church strictly adhering to the Covid-19 guidelines after obtaining permission from the concerned local civic authorities.

“For weddings, a maximum of (all-inclusive priest, choir, and photographer...) 50 persons and for funerals 20 persons are permitted to participate.

“For the weddings, make sure that the party prepares the list of participants and gets it approved and obtain individual passes from the local civic authority.

“All those who participate in the wedding should carry Aadhar card, invitation card, the individual pass issued by the local civic authority and the list in which one's name is found. The list should be approved by the local civic authority.

“Let us join hands with the government in controlling the spread of Covid-19 pandemic by restricting our movement in public and praying for the health and protection of all,” the bishop stated in the letter.

Dear Bishop Saldhana Thank you very much for FINALLY implementing these guidelines for the health and well being of Mangalorean Catholic community. I am sorry to bring to your notice that YOU ARE TOO LATE. Your decision came too late after cases surging, the health system starting to crumble and bodies arriving at the cemetery. You did not have to wait until the government decisions rather you could have assessed the severity of the situation and done something DIFFERENTLY by quickly implementing these guidelines well in advance. It is embarrassing to notice that the government of India is fooling around with the lives of people but as a well-educated LEADER of the CATHOLIC community you could have acted fast, anticipating the severity of the COVID-19 crisis. You encouraged all the recent events like elaborate holy week celebrations WITHOUT ANY COMPLIANCE with public health practices and allowed an invisible enemy to sneak into the community to cause the devastating atrocities. Recently, when the COVID-19 cases are surging, I have seen your participation in big events like Centenary celebrations, Ursuline vows and the Ordinations etc. WITHOUT ANY adherence to COVID safety protocol. Yesterday, I briefly watched the ordination ceremony of priests in Rosario cathedral headed by Bishop Saldhana. I was DISAPPOINTED to notice that two priests were distributing communion without masking in the presence of Bishop. In another incident, it was DISGUSTING to notice a senior priest hugging the guest priest on the stage during HOLY SATURDAY celebration in Mangalore three weeks ago. I have never seen anything like this from the priests during a pandemic who receive quality education in the seminary. These practices are ABSOLUTELY INAPPARRORAITE for the current situation. We respectfully do only ‘NAMASTE’ by bowing in acknowledgement of the services. The pictures of these INAPROPRIATE public health practices produce a bad reputation to your responsibility when a professional views it on a public health perspective. We have already lost 6 Jesuit priests in Ahmadabad due to COVID-19 this week within 30 hrs. You should strongly IMPLEMENT the adherence of PROPER HEALTH and SAFETY COVID-19 protocol for SELF, the PRIESTS and YOUR FLOCK. If you need any help, I am glad to provide you GUIDANCE. Dr. Dorothy Rego BSc, MSc, PhD, MPH

Can the disease count the number of people gathered? Why risk life for a small time entertainment? Those who want to marry urgent, let the groom and bride complete it for the time being and they can arrange grand function after this disease recede. Funeral will be a solo affair since the disease is showing its presence in every gathering.

This is a good news. People need not follow the church laws (Like attending mass on every Sunday)... we can pray at home even without even going to church. Nowadays online mass and also prayers are available. Let it continue.

Centralized online mass or adoration or prayers in different languages at different times a day may be conducted instead of each parish of Mangalore diocese conducting at a time. So all can participate and mass prayers and adoration are not a competition

It's noteworthy and appreciative of the bishop to pro-actively issue scientific guidelines to the people. It is also appreciative of the people of all the parishes to have strictly adhered to all the guidelines so far.
