Mangalore, Aug 6: The department of paediatrics, A J Institute of Medical Sciences and Laxmi Memorial College of Nursing in association with Indian Academy of Paediatrics, DK branch jointly organized ‘World Breast Feeding Week’ at A J Hospital, here, recently.
Dr Latha Sharma, professor and head of the department of gynecology and Dr Santhosh Soans, professor and head of the department of paediatrics and vice-president –central IAP were the chief guests. Professor Larissa Martha, principal of Laxmi Memorial College of Nursing presided over the function.
Breast feeding week related activities like video show, poster exhibition and seminars were arranged during the programme. Pamplets and booklets containing information about breast feeding were distributed to all the audience.
Dr Soans explained about the various effects of bottle feeding (artificial feeding) among children and advised all the paediatricians and general practioners to promote breast feeding.
Dr Sharma especially highlighted several advantages of breast feeding and called upon the gynecologists to advice the mothers to exclusively feed their baby at least for first six months. Professor Larissa explained the right method of breast feeding and said that it is ideal to breast feed the baby till the age of two.
