Udupi, Sep 13: State home minister, Dr V S Acharya, contended that Balagangadhara Tilak started the practice of celebrating public Ganeshotsavas in order to reinforce unity among all sections of the society, adding that the aim of Tilak was not driven by purposes relating to religion. He was speaking after inaugurating a commercial-cum-residential complex named ‘Sri Ganesha’ built by Sarvajanika Ganeshotsav Samiti Alevoor here, on Sunday September 12.

He hailed the Ganeshotsav committees for undertaking social service activities and pooling funds for undertaking people-friendly projects.

MLA, K Raghupati Bhat, BJP district president, K Udayakumar Shetty, municipal president, Kiran Kumar and various other dignitaries were present. On the occasion, Mahabala Poojary, who agreed to part with the site at a reduced price, was honoured.

Rajesh Shetty welcomed. Manjesh Kumar proposed the vote of thanks. Sukesh Nayak compered the programme.
