Mangalore: School Bus Accident – Injured Student Succumbs in Hospital

Mangalore, Oct 6: Aishwarya alias Lolakshi (15), a tenth standard student of Tokkottu Permannur St Sebastian High School, who was seriously injured in an accident involving a van of Bajal Pakkaladka Sneha Public School on Tuesday October 5, breathed her last at a hospital in the city later.

Lolakshi was walking along with a relative named Srikant and her neighbour, Rajeevi Shetty, to attend her mid term examination, when she and those walking alongside her were hit by the van. Aishwarya, a meritorious student and student leader of the school, is survived by a younger brother and parents.

Rajeevi Shetty (40) from Chembugudde, and Srikant (9), who were pedestrians, and Abdul Rahiman Shahil (4) from Babbukatte, Mustafa (4) from Kumpala Hosagadde, and Mohammed Shanif (5) from Permannur, who were inside the van, suffered grave injuries. All of them are being treated in a local hospital. Fatima and Mohal, both from Permannur, escaped with minor injuries. Brake failure had reportedly caused the accident.

A pall of gloom descended on St Sebastian High School in Permannur on Tuesday, as two students of the school lost their lives. In addition to Aishwarya, the school lost another student, Denzil D’Souza, son of Joseph D'Souza, Neeti Nagar, Shaktinagar here and student of std IX, whose body was found lying near the railway tracks in Tokkottu on Tuesday morning.

    Aishwarya alias Lolakshi (15), a tenth standard meritorious student and student leader of the school must have been a popular student. What a tragic way of leaving all her colleagues behind. May God give strength to the family members, teachers, students and others to overcome the deep sorrow. May god grant her soul eternal peace.

    Until there is no strict code of conduct for the drivers of Public Carrier Vehicles, this type of accidents and deaths will go on.

    The Public Carrier drivers should realise that they are carrying passengers who have paid for their safety while plying them, without any nightmares on their route till they reach their destination The Public Carrier drivers are the captain of their vehicles hence their responsibility should be of very high standard with responsibility. Our Public Carrier drivers feel that they are doing great favour to the passenger by picking them from the designated stops and reaching them to their destinations. They sometime ignore the designated stops for picking and ping passengers that they silently bear.

    Another issue is overloading of vehicles, the vehicles with goods dangerously jetting out speeding on overcrowded streets.

    Moreover, the Municipal waste clearing vehicles taking the stinking leftovers without any cover and parking them in an obstructing position on the narrow roads to take the wastes from the roadside bins.
    In addition, there should be a uniform code for school vehicles and specially designed autos and mini-vans to carry the schoolchildren. In Mumbai like city, the School-Van/Auto going students can go few minutes before the long bell that we should introduce in our city.
