Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Oct 9: The coast experienced cloudy weather since early evening on Friday October 9. Subrahmanya, Beltangady and Sullia taluks received good rains. Mangalore, Puttur and Bantwal taluks did not get any rains. Udupi district too went without any rains on Friday.

The fact that water storage in Varahi dam near Hosangady in Udupi district has reached 20.819 tmc as against 24.35 tmc storage on this day last year, has risen hopes of increased power production. Chief engineer of the project, N Ramaiah, said that the project would now be able to generate 585.5 million units of power. He disclosed that the three generators installed here are not being run to their full capacities at present, to be able to generate more power during summer months to meet higher demand.

Several places in southern hinterlands received good rains during the above period. The meteorological department has predicted light to normal rains in the coast and light rains in northern hinterlands till Sunday morning.
