Mangalore, Oct 9: As per the recommendation of Mangalore University, the state government has suspended the history lecturer of government first grade college in Car Street here from service, for his alleged involvement in fiddling with the marks obtained by students who had appeared for law degree examination in 2008.

The lecturer in question, who was entrusted with the work of tabulation work of the examination, is accused of recording marks that were different from what the valuators had allotted to students, while copying them in the university register. It had been said that many students who had not appeared for the examination had been allotted marks, marks of many had been increased, while a few had got lesser marks.

After the allegation of tampering with the marks had surfaced, the university had formed an inquiry team under the leadership of advocate, Gopalakrishna Bhat. In its preliminary report, the team had found the lecturer guilty of the above charge. Accordingly, the university had recommended to the education department to suspend the lecturer from service.

Acting on the recommendation, under secretary in the department of education, Nandakumar, issued suspension order of the lecturer on Friday October 8, stating that the lecturer had not properly discharged the examination duties entrusted to him, and charging him with violating the examination rules as found by the inquiry team. The orders, issued under Karnataka Civil Service Rules, say that the suspension will be in force, pending departmental inquiry and lodging of criminal complaint against the lecturer in question.
