Beltangady: ICYM Local Varado Hosts ‘Konkani Sanskruti Fest’

Beltangady, Oct 12: Beltangady Varado of Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM) had organized ‘Konkani Culture Festival’(Konkanni Sanskruti Fest) depicting Konkani culture on Sunday October 10 at Venur. All the nine parishes of the Varado participated in the competitions organized on the occasion, with vigour and a spirit of uplifting their culture, traditions and language. More than 200 youth of the Varado became part of this great event.










Vice president of Venur parish, Arun Crasta, presided over the inaugural, which was held at 11.30 am.  Varado ICYM Director, Fr Simon D’Souza, delivered the introductory address and briefed the importance of the youth coming together to uplift their culture in the modern world. Richard Alvares, who was the resource person, stressed on the youth empowerment in this International Year of the Youth.

This was followed by competitions, which turned out to be a wonderful day for the Varado youth, who showed keen interest in presenting the richness and beauty of Konkani culture. Jiyo Agrar, Richard Alvares and Sr Lolita judged the competitions.

The Vicar vara of Belthangady Varado, Fr James D’Souza, inaugurated the International Year of the Youth in the Varado, by setting a dove free at the closing ceremony. Speaking thereafter, he appreciated the youth for their efforts in coming together, and termed their efforts to bring forth their talents as praiseworthy. James D’Souza, president of Catholic Co-operative Society at Belthangady, in his message, urged the youth to act as the protectors of the culture.

Vincent and Gilpin, president and vice presidents of the Diocesan Central Council, were also present. Santhosh Goveas and Freeda Veigas were the emcees for the inaugural and concluding ceremonies. Belthangady, Venur and Ujire ICYM units secured I, II and III place in that order. The award for the best emcee was bagged by Ujire unit. Nelson Monis, president of ICYM Varado, compered the whole programme. Anoop Pais, secretary, thanked all those who worked for the success of this event. Venur ICYM unit hosted this programme successfully. The Varado youth, through their united efforts, have taken the mission of upholding the richness and beautFy of Konkani culture further.

    A programme on Konkani for the Catholic youth is always very welcome as they need to be taught to relish the sweet taste of Konkani. It is wonderful to see so many Konkani loving youth in the pictures in their zeal to celeberate the Konkani fest. I wish Fr. Simon, the youth and all concerned in all their future endavours.

    Its a history in the ICYM belthangady deanery,coz the programme was held on a memorable day thats on 10-10-2010 and it was amazing performance by all our youth.Our youth have been proved that though we are in modern era,still we're enriched with our beautiful "Konkan culture".I'm realy impressed the active participation and the co-operation of our youth.Definatly the special thanks goes to FR.Saimon,the backbone of belthangady deanery ICYM.Keeeep rock on guys....
