Kasargod, Jan 20: In relation to a case in which two policemen had been accused of seizing gold biscuits from a person, who was taking them for selling, and refusing to part with them, the court here has awarded sentences of three years imprisonment each to two policemen. Jeep driver of the armed police contingent in the town, C P Sebastian, and T Sridharan, a native of Karadka Kumbol, who worked as a constable in the town police station, have been found guilty in this case.

Mohammed Rafique, residing near Talangare, was proceeding towards KSRTC bus stand with six gold biscuits worth three lac rupees for selling them in Mangalore on March 27, 1998, when the above accused, who came in a jeep, stopped him. They had taken away the gold biscuits from Rafique’s possession. Later, it was alleged that the two refused to give back the biscuits, even after documents were produced regarding their ownership. The policemen of town police station had registered the case.

The case later, was transferred to crime branch. Finding some lapses in the proceedings at the court of the chief judicial magistrate here, which had sentenced them to two years of imprisonment each, and imposed fine of Rs 10,000, the accused had approached the district court. The district court had accordingly, asked the CJM court to hear the case again.
