Puttur, Jan 21: The case, in which John Thomas (32), had died by drowning in a tank near his home in Kalanja village near Uppinangady, has been modified from that of suicide, into abetment to suicide. On a complaint filed by Annamma, wife of Thomas, a case has been registered in Uppinangady police station against a person named Ranjit.

The policemen have taken Ranjit into custody. Initially, the death of Thomas was thought to be accidental death, which was converted into suicide thereafter. In her complaint, Annamma said Ranjit, a childhood friend of John Thomas, used to visit the latter repeatedly and tease Thomas, an innocent human being, in front of Annamma. She said Ranjit pestered her often to marry him, and had also told Thomas that the latter will have no other alternative but to commit suicide, if the former opts to take away his wife. Ranjit also used to make fun of the behaviour of Thomas, she claimed.

John Thomas, who went to bed at midnight on January 17, had gone missing thereafter. His body was recovered on January 18 in a tank of a church. As Annamma had become unconscious after learning about her husband’s death, it was registered as a case of suicide.
