Udupi, Jan 28: A function to felicitate recently elected zilla panchayat (ZP)and taluk Panchayats (TP)within the district belonging to minority communities, was organized at Don Bosco Hall here on Wednesday January 26. Fr William Martis and Dr Mohammed Rafiq participated as guests.
Speaking on the occasion, Fr Martis noted that the number of ZP and TP members from minority communities who got elected in the district, stands at one and six respectively. He said that 21 percent of the district’s belong to minority communities. “Only one Muslim member got elected as an independent candidate. Taking into account their population, members from minority communities should have got at least 20 seats,” he felt.
Dr Gerald Pinto introduced the members and felicitated them. Thereafter, Fr Martis garlanded and draped shawls around the members, besides presenting them a memento each. The following elected representatives were honoured on the occasion:
Stella Ida D Souza moodbelle for Zilla Panchyat and Veronoca Carnelio, Kemmannu, T M Rahamatulla, Tonse, Xavier D’Mello, Prescilla D’Mello, Shankarpura, Roshni Olivera, Airody and Lilly D’ Souza, Mudarangady are elected for Taluk panchyat.
President Kateeb Abdul Rasid presided, seretary proposed vote of thanks.
