Mangalore: Austrian Tourist Turns Sick, Returns by Special Flight

Mangalore, Mar 8: Renette Grabber (61), an Austrian citizen, who had come to the city for touring the area, suddenly fell sick. After getting treatment at A J Hospital here, she went back in a German air ambulance flight on Monday March 7.

Sources in the airport here said that this was one of the rare occasions in which a sick citizen of another country is picked by a special aircraft. They said that elsewhere too, this practice is not normally in vogue.

Grabber had come to the city along with her husband, Bruno Grabber. She had visited several spots including Kudroly Lord Gokarnanath Temple. During these visits, she suffered hypertension, leading to brain-related problems. On February 25, she was admitted into A J Hospital here. She recovered, and returned to her country.

The chartered air ambulance flight, which was specially flown to pick her up, had a physician, a male nurse, and two pilots, airport sources added.

    My be the news is new to India and Mangalore.

    A gentleman from Koppa (a place after Agumbe) was working in Muscat for a a German company by name: "Deutag Drilling".
    The gentleman Mr. John Anchan was airlifted from Muscat by a speial chartered plane to Mumbai. He was treated at Mumbai and returned to his workplace Muscat after his full recovery.

    They care for their employees and for their nationals!

    Though this may be new for Mangalore, its a common practice in Germany and Europe.
    people have an option to pay an extra premium when they insure themselves for health treatment for medical evacuation from abroad.
    Doctors recruited by these air ambulances are specially trained Air Medics & Intensivists who either work for air ambulances full time or opt to provide their services in their free time.
    I have done several of these duties to earn an extra buck in my free time when I was working in Germany.
