Mangalore, Mar 8: On the day as women raise their demand for more rights and freedom, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel asserted that yet more freedom for women is illogical. More freedom may lead to unmanageable behaviour among women, he reasoned. He also said that it may also mess up the rich culture of our country.

He was speaking after inaugurating the International Women’s Day organized under the joint auspices of Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat, department of women and child development, District Legal Services Authority, District Federation of Mahila Mandals and Karnataka State Commission for Women at Town Hall here on Tuesday March 8.

Pointing out about the vedic period, he said women in our country enjoyed greater respect and veneration unlike other western countries. He denied the argument that more freedom for women will improve their status and said that letting women do whatever they want in the name of freedom is not our culture. The MP suggested the gathering to consider the International Women’s Day as an occasion to discuss how to preserve and promote Indian culture.

Shakuntala A, deputy director, department of women and child development, Mangalore welcomed the gathering and delivered the introductory address. Zilla panchayat president K T Shailaja Bhat presided.

ZPvice-president Dhanalakshmi Janardana D, gynaecologist Dr Rathidevi and Federation of Mahila Mandals president Premalatha Rao among others were present.

A book ‘Nisargadatta Ahara’ compiled by Vidya Nayak was released on the occasion.
