Gurugram, Jun 17 (IANS): The police have busted an illegal call centre operating from a house in the residential area of Palam Vihar in Gurugram.

The call centre mostly used to cheat foreign nationals on the pretext of technical assistance, the police said on Friday.

While duping their clients, they used to introduce themselves as a service provider of the company.

According to the police, a team led by Bijender Singh, station house officer (SHO) of the cyber crime police station, raided the call centre on Thursday night which was located in the Palam Vihar area in Gurugram following a tip-off.

During the raid, the police arrested three accused and seized mobile phones and laptops along with Rs 30,000 from the spot.

The accused have been identified as Mukul (call centre owner), Sameer and Tushar.

"We received specific inputs that a fake call centre had cheated several foreign nationals on the pretext of technical support. The call centre was being operated without a licence to be issued by the Department of Telecommunications (DOT)," said Singh.

During the questioning, the accused revealed that they used to send fake emails to foreign nationals using the name of different companies. The email contained a fake customer service centre number. When people called on that number, it used to route it to this fake call centre and they introduced themselves as a service provider of the company and extorted money fraudulently from customers through gift vouchers on the pretext of providing technical support.

"How the accused was operating the fake call centre is a part of an investigation. The involvement of other people cannot be ruled out," the officer added.

An FIR under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the IT Act has been registered at the cyber crime police station.
