Bengaluru, Jul 14: A meeting was presided over by the minister of social welfare and backward classes, Kota Srinivas Poojary at the Vidhana Soudha here on July 14 over distributing boiled rice that is an important food in the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi. The minister said that a delegation has visited Kerala state and conducted a study in this connection. The people have been demanding the rice for some time.

“The coastal districts require one lac quintal rice per month which comes to 12 lac quintals per year. Only two and half lac quintal rice is grown in the two districts. The remaining rice will be procured from Mysuru, Mandya, Shivamogga and Belagavi. It is planned to obtain additional rice from Kerala and Telangana. Another delegation will visit Telangana at the weekend,” he said.

“A delegation of the MLAs and MPs in the coastal districts will visit the chief minister on the basis of a report of the study teams to distribute boiled rice from next year,” he said.

Commissioner of food and civil supplies Kanagavalli, state food corporation vice president Kiran Kumar Kodgi, food corporation managing director Basavaraja Somannanavara and food and civil supplies department joint director Vijaykumar were present.
