Shimoga, Jan 26: The Karnataka State FIDE Rated Chess Championship concluded on Monday January 26 at 3 pm in the PES Institute of Technology and Management, Shimoga. The programme started with the invocation by Ashwini EM. K N Ural, assistant professor of the institute, welcomed and introduced the chief guest district superintendent of police S Muguran to the players. Kishna Udupa was felicitated by the chief guest. The guest distributed the prizes to the winners.
Stany GA from Shimoga played white pieces against Vijay Keerthi from Mysore. Vijaykeerthi opted irregular variation in Paulson opening. Stany being a sole leader for the last two days, needed only half point to become the champion. They played a short game and agreed for a draw.
In the second board, Phanindra T S played white with Arvind Shastri. Shastri played Dutch defense and till the middle game, both were equal. Shastri made an inaccurate move h5, after which white got slight advantage. Panindra offered for a draw and Shastri accepted it.
Aniket Pawashe of Belgaum played with white pieces against Gahan MG from Mangalore. Gahan played Grunfeld defense. Aniket played better but due to time pressure, overlooked Rook c7 move after which he lost by force 42 moves
Shruthi K of Shimoga played London system with Vijendra YG from Mysore. The game dragged for too long, but turned at last in favour of Shruthi, who won the game in 40 moves.
On sixth board Gautham JK of Shimoga played white pieces with Yashas D of Shimoga.
Yashas opted for Scandinavian defence and got strong position on board. Gautam blundered while exchanging piece and lost in 35 moves.
At the end, Stany GA became the champion with nine points as against 8.5 points earned by Vijay Keerti K from Mysore. In the under eight category, Ashwin J from Mysore became the champion while the prize under this category for girls went to Smrithi Suresh from Bangalore. Vishnu Ram got the prize meant for under ten for boys, with Tulsi M annexing the prize meant for girls under the same category. Under-12 boys’ title went to Augustin A from Bangalore while the Under-12 girls title went to Gangamma B N, Mysore. Rakshith R Umesh, Shimoga got highest points under the U-14 category with Nisha N Patkar also from Shimoga, topping the girls section in the same age group.
Under the above 14 years group. Supriya H B bagged the prize. The prize meant for the veteran player (above 50 years) was bagged by Bhagwat S M, Dharwad.
