Puttur: Netravati river dries up at Uppinangady, fear of scarcity of drinking water looms large

Daijiworld Media Network – Puttur (MS)

Puttur, Apr 10: The lifeline of Dakshina Kannada district, Netravati river, is completely dried up at Uppinangady due to the simmering summer heat. This is the second instance in the last four years, where the river bed is seen. There is a fear that drinking water supply might get affected.

Though the Netravati river continues to flow after meeting Kumaradhara river which is nearby, it is unable to reach Kumaradhara as the flow is cut off due to evaporation of water.

Most of the devotees offer the ashes of their loved ones at the meeting point of Netravati and Kumaradhara rivers. This ritual is affected now due to the drying up of Netravati river. Though there is an opportunity for devotees to have a bath after the meeting of Kumaradhara river with Netravati, the spot is dangerous. At present, some sand pits are dug at the Sangam point and water is made to stay in the same for the convenience of devotees.

Though some parts of the taluk have received rains, the rain water evaporated due to the mercury which soared after the rain.

Yes this is the result of Yettinahole Project which damaged the environment and ecological balance. Both Veerappa Moily and Sadananda Gowda must answer why not a liter of water reached the intended areas for which the Netravati River was diverted. Water would have reached the drought stricken areas if it was supplied scientifically through laying of pipelines and construction of reservoirs without diverting the river and felling thousands of trees.

When will Mangalore get a sewage treatment plant?. Mangalore suffers from water problems every year and Water tank owners are becoming rich by selling diesel mixed water to people. Imagine the amount of water we could get back if we treat the waste water our city generates.

Bro, without adequate water supply from corporation, how are the new permissions for multistory structures being granted! They should understand that captive borewell water is only temporary solution and not potable; after all wells drying up, from where are they going to supply water!!

Cynthia, those should be premonsoon showers; how these dumbos can depend on these showers to such huge concrete structures in and around Mangalore city? Still huge concrete structures are coming up?

Agree bro. I dont believe these dumbo predictions. We predict better than them without sitting on a comfortable chair that revolves in ac. They warn with yellow colour....that means more than average rain and flooding type. As per yellow alert Predictions, if rain had come, nethravathi wouldn't have dried up ...

This is just the beginning of the climate change; with most captive open wells drying up, many contaminated with sewage effluent, imagine the future of those places which are all dependent on water from this only source! Our administration is in deep slumber oblivious of what's going on!
