Mumbai, Jul 7: Six armed men made way with Rs 53 lac stolen from a bank vehicle that was on its way to deposit cash into a ATM in Ghansoli on Wednesday July 6.
The vehicle belonging to Union Bank of India was carrying cash from the bank's Vashi office in Sector 19 to an ATM in Ghansoli.
Police sources said that the dacoits were aware of the fact that huge amount of cash was kept in the SUV.
The dacoits who were armed with choppers and rods blocked the SUV with a blue Tavera in an interior road, smashed the windows and fled with the cashbox.
Muj-eeb Shaikh, assistant commissioner of police (Vashi division) said security for cash transfer for several ATMs was outsourced to a company called Pro Interactive Services India Private Limited.
However, at the time of the incident only a driver and two officials were in the vehicle without any security guard.
Incidentally, the SUV had taken a different route to the ATM in Ghansoli on Wednesday.
A case has been registered at the APMC police station.
Police are investigating the reason for the change of route and also the possibility of a tip-off from an insider.
