Mangaluru, Feb 24: Manipal School recently hosted a skill education program as per the CBSE directive. A two-day bagless skill education program was conducted on February 16-17, as part of the CBSE initiative to promote vocational skills among students.
The programme was conducted for all students of classes VI to VII based on their areas of interest. The students were given a choice of baking, block printing, mask making, herbal heritage, marketing, embroidery, coding and ‘What to do when a doctor is not around.’ The training was conducted by in-house teachers with lecture demos by professionals in each of the areas. Baking:- During the workshop, students were introduced to the fundamental concepts of baking, including the science behind it and the various ingredients used, the history of baking, understanding how it has evolved over time and its significance in different cultures. Furthermore, the students had the opportunity to apply their learning by baking muffins and brownies under the guidance of expert instructors
Herbal Heritage- During the programme, students were introduced to the fascinating world of plants and their classification. The programme placed a special emphasis on Indian herbs and their significance in traditional medicine and Ayurveda. To further enhance their learning experience, the students created a botanical garden within the school premises. As part of the program, the students had an opportunity to visit Shobavanna in Moodbidri and to the Naturopathy hospital. To enhance their practical skills, the students received training from Ashwini Shetty, a traditional herbal practitioner. Under her guidance, the students learned to make various herbal lotions, cough syrups, and masala buttermilk.
Mask Making - During the programme, students were introduced to the concept of masks and their importance in tribal cultures, the materials used to make masks and the significance of the facial expressions copied onto them. They learned about the fascinating mask dances of Sikkim, the West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh masks, the Butta Bommalu mask of Himachal Pradesh, and the Kokna mask of Gujarat. To further enhance their learning experience, the students received expert guidance from Arjun, a professional mask artiste.
Block printing - During the programme, students were introduced to the concept of block printing and the tools used in this art form, the steps involved in block making, which included blocks. Students also had the opportunity to experiment with block printing using various vegetables, showcasing the versatility of this art form and the fabrics and dyes used.
Embroidery - During the programme, students were introduced to the evolution of embroidery, from its early origins to its contemporary forms. The program also introduced students to various embroidery stitches, such as Chikankari, Rajasthani, Gujarati, Sindhi, and Phulkari stitches. They were tasked with designing and creating dress, kerchief, and tablecloth designs using embroidery techniques.
What to do when doctor is not around - During the programme session titled 'When the Doctor is Not Around', students were educated about common illnesses and their symptoms. The session covered a wide range of common sicknesses and their symptoms to help students recognize and understand the signs that indicate a particular illness. This knowledge can be valuable in situations where immediate medical assistance may not be readily available. In addition to symptom identification, students were also taught about common remedies and helpful home cures for these illnesses. During the programme, a nurse was invited into the classroom to provide more insights to the students.
Coding - During the coding programme, students were introduced to the basics of Scratch, a visual programming language that enables them to create interactive stories, animations, and games.
Marketing - During the marketing programme, several key topics were covered to provide a comprehensive understanding of marketing concepts. Grade 11 CEBA students also performed a role play on the topic 'How marketing strategy helps in creating brand awareness, drive profit and growth, fostering customer relationships, and enhancing overall business performance'. The programme also featured a session by a resource person, Deepthi Dinesh Prabhu.
The students were enthusiastic and eager to learn, and many of them expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to gain practical skills that could help them in their future careers. The programme also received positive feedback from the teachers, parent and school administrators, who praised the teachers, school and CBSE for organizing such a helpful and informative initiative. By organizing this bagless skill education programme, Manipal School and CBSE aimed to offer a holistic education experience that goes beyond textbooks and classroom learning. The programme provided students with a unique opportunity to explore their interests, develop their skills and gain practical knowledge that can be applied in their personal and professional lives.
