Heavy rains in Coastal region cause damage, school holiday in DK on Jun 27

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru/Udupi (SS/TP)

Mangaluru/Udupi, Jun 26: Deputy commissioner Mullai Muhilan has declared a holiday for all primary, high schools, and anganwadis across Dakshina Kannada district on Thursday, June 27.

This decision follows a red alert issued by the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for coastal Karnataka until 8:30 am on Thursday. However, no holiday for schools and cooleges has been declared in Udupi district so far.

The IMD has forecasted isolated heavy to very heavy rain and sustained wind speeds of 30-40 kmph over coastal Karnataka on Thursday, with similar conditions expected to persist from June 28 to June 30.

Meanwhile, heavy monsoon rains intensified across the coastal region on Wednesday, causing widespread damage and disrupting commuters. Udupi and surrounding rural areas experienced copious rainfall throughout the day, resulting in artificial flooding in many areas and making roads impassable for vehicles and pedestrians. Urban areas including Udupi city, Manipal, Brahmavar, and Malpe reported heavy downpours.

Residents are advised to exercise caution as the weather situation may lead to slippery roads, landslides, and falling trees. Fishermen have been strongly advised against venturing into the sea, and locals and tourists are urged to avoid coastal areas due to safety concerns.

In case of emergencies, the public can seek assistance from the control room of the DK DC Office at 1077 or by calling 0824-2442590.

Notable rainfall totals in the region include 188 mm in Manchi (Bantwal taluk), 154.5 mm in Ira, and significant amounts in other areas, underscoring the severity of the ongoing weather conditions.

Where are the heavy rains; DK has been declared to be 38% monsoon deficient in June as compared to yearly averages 😞; this figure too seems to be exaggerated IMHO! If the Smart City cannot handle this type of rain, just imagine what would be the state of affairs if it rained in excess!! Now they have to start thinking about how to conserve water for the next year summer months for very obvious reasons 😔! Please read the Moody's report on the serious possible consequences of scarcity of rains coupled with increasing summer temperatures in this country!! Without water every thing will grind to a halt!! Please note that this is a very personal opinion based on information available in the public domain and my perception; kindly do your own research and analysis 🤔!!!!

It says there was cyclone in bengal and prevalent of persisting heat in northern states made the rain weak. Here in Mangaluru ( also in moodabidri) one of the temple poojary's who knows astrology predicted about the heavy rain and asked the devotees to pray. He said about the placement of sun and some planets which will cause rain.

Good for school going children who have to brave the flood like situation on DK roads. Why don't the DC look at the pathetic conditions of the roads and instruct to those responsible for the problems. The concerned MLA, MPs are only fit to protest against the govt for unnecessary issues. For genuine issues they are hand in gloves to make money.
