Davanagere, Sep 17: International Day of Democracy, St Aloysius International School and PU College Harihar, in collaboration with Mother Theresa Convent, distributed ration kits to 50 transgender individuals in Davanagere on September 15. This initiative highlighted the institution’s commitment to justice, liberty, and equality, values central to democracy.
The event, led by Fr Eric Mathias SJ, director of St Aloysius International School and College, provided a platform for transgender individuals to express their struggles. Fr Eric introduced the sisters of the MC convent, along with the staff and students, to the transgender attendees, urging them to share their life challenges.
One of the transgender speakers conveyed the immense difficulties of surviving without family support and the lack of employment opportunities. With no other options, she revealed how begging and selling her body became her only means to survive. This emotional testimony echoed the challenges faced by many in the transgender community, such as social stigma, exclusion from the job market, and discrimination.
Other transgender individuals also shared similar stories, underscoring the need for systemic reforms in areas like healthcare, legal recognition, and education. The event became a significant moment to raise awareness about the transgender community's ongoing battles and the need for societal change.
Chaitra, a representative from the transgender community, extended her heartfelt gratitude to Fr Eric Mathias, the MC convent sisters, and the staff and students of St Aloysius International School and PU College for their generous support during their most challenging times. The institution’s compassion and dedication to promoting social inclusion were deeply appreciated.
This event not only showcased the institution’s active role in promoting humanitarian aid but also reinforced the importance of constitutional rights, equality, and social justice for all members of society, regardless of gender identity.
