Mangaluru, May 12: As "Stuttering Awareness Week" is observed globally from May 9 to 15, Father Muller College of Speech and Hearing has taken the lead locally to shine a spotlight on a condition that continues to impact communication and self-confidence—stuttering.
The college is using this annual campaign to raise awareness, foster empathy, and promote early intervention among children and adults.

Stuttering, or stammering, is a speech disorder marked by disruptions in speech flow such as repetitions (e.g., “li-li-like this”), prolongations (e.g., “llllike this”), or involuntary pauses. It is one among several speech disorders — including articulation issues, voice problems, and language delays — that can affect educational progress, social interaction, and self-esteem if not addressed early.
This summer holiday period has been highlighted by the college as an ideal time for parents and caregivers to seek speech and language screening for children. Experts at Father Muller emphasised that early detection and professional support can make a significant difference in outcomes.
The awareness drive is spearheaded by Professor Cynthia Santhmayor, principal of the college and a seasoned speech-language pathologist who holds a master’s degree from the United States. Her work, colleagues said, has helped transform the lives of many individuals struggling with speech challenges, restoring confidence and communication abilities.
Also part of the expert team are Dr Ramandeep Kaur, professor and head of the department of Speech and Language Pathology; Sushmitha U J, speech language pathologist grade I; Lakshmi S Kunnath, assistant professor; Frannie Lamita Fernandes, speech language pathologist grade I; Casmin K J, audiologist and speech language pathologist grade II; Melissa Benedicta Saldanha, Asif Maitheen, and Al Shifa Khan — all speech language pathologists, grade I.
Faculty members noted that speech and language educators at the college provide personalised therapy plans that not only improve fluency but also build self-esteem and equip families to support their loved ones through the therapy journey. The overarching goal, they said, is to enable individuals to speak with clarity and pride, paving the way for inclusive communication.
The speech and language outpatient department (OPD) is located at OPD 67, 3rd Floor, Utility Building, Father Muller Medical College Hospital. The team is inviting the public to seek assessments or consultations for speech-related concerns, assuring families of professional support and a compassionate approach.
“Let’s get those words off the tip of your tongue—loud, clear, and proud!” was the message conveyed by the department as it marked "Stuttering Awareness Week" with renewed commitment.
