Hubballi, July 30: Ravi Dyamappa Channannavar, who cracked the UPSC Civil Services Exam in 2008 with an all-India rank of 703 despite extreme poverty, continues to inspire nearly two decades later with his journey of resilience and public service.
Born in the remote Gadag district to daily-wage labourers Dyamappa and Ratnavva, Ravi supported his studies from a young age—filling chilli sacks at the APMC in Mulgund and sweeping cinema theatres and waiting tables in a hotel in Dharwad to make ends meet . He went on to complete his BA at Karnataka College, Dharwad, and cleared the UPSC on his first attempt.

Over the years, Ravi has held several key policing positions: SP in?Kalaburagi, Belgaum, Ballari, Shivamogga, Mysuru, and CID, and currently serves as Deputy Inspector General of Police overseeing Fire and Emergency Services in Bengaluru. Known for initiatives like?Tereda Mane (open house sessions) and free UPSC coaching camps for underprivileged youth, he has championed social causes and upliftment through education.
Reflecting on his early struggles, Ravi once said “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Policing, education and farming are my three pillars of passion.”
Today, Ravi is recognized as a changemaker who transformed personal adversity into a lifelong commitment to public service. His legacy offers hopeto all who strive to rise above their circumstances through determination and integrity.
